Ling Ling Bird loves Christmas!

But do you know what he likes the most?

The cake, the carols or the Christmas roast?

Join Ling Ling Bird and his family on their festive adventures as they explore a feast of sights, sounds, smells, tastes and textures at this magical time of the year!
As Ling Ling Bird and his sister Lola Louise find their Christmas stockings, bake a colossal Christmas cake, wait up to see Father Christmas (you might also call him Santa Claus), open presents and pull Christmas crackers while being watched over by cheeky elves on shelves, this bright and fun festive story offers an exciting and engaging way for children to learn and practice Christmas vocabulary. The book stars a character with hearing loss (from her personal experience with her own children, one of whom is deaf and the other typically hearing, the author believes that representation and inclusion really matter to all our children) and incorporates some subtle deaf awareness messaging, as we see Ling Ling Bird, who is deaf, putting on his cochlear implant speech processors first thing in the morning, which enables him to enjoy the many joyous sounds of Christmas. The story goes on to explore all the five senses, as Ling Ling Bird and Lola Louise are immersed in the rich sensory experience of the holiday season: they relish the taste of their turkey dinner (and the Christmas pudding is a winner!), they love to feel the freezing snow outside and then the heat of the warming fire inside, they breathe in the sweet spicy smell of gingerbread and are entranced by the sight of the sparkling Christmas tree (not to mention the colourful gifts below!), while they listen out for the ting-a-ling-ling of Santa’s sled, the church bells ringing and the festive carol singing beneath a star-filled sky.
But can you guess which is Ling Ling Bird’s favourite part of Christmas? Might it be the same thing that you like best, even more than presents and treats and all the rest? Read and find out! Ages 3-8

Opal and the Secret Code

By Janie Lancaster

Join Pa and Opal as they travel across the Oklahoma Prairie, enter an old stone house where they use a secret code — a code that changes a young Deaf girl’s life forever. The Opal story is based on the true story of Opal Fleming and how learning American Sign Language opened a whole new world for her. It shows how her new language helped to bring her out of her dark, lonely world. It is hoped that this work of historical fiction will be cherished by the Deaf community and add to their true-life-history and help to promote compassion and understanding in classrooms. Opal”s resilient spirit enabled her to overcome so much in her lifetime. She became a well-educated, dignified person loved by so many. For 20 years she was a teacher’s aide at the North Carolina School for the Deaf. She died in 2003.

Looking for a picture book about microtia? A sweet and gentle way to introduce disability and diversity to children? Jojo’s Tiny Ear is charming, hand-illustrated book for kids that tells the story of the author’s son, Jojo, and his hearing disability.

Jojo is a happy boy who loves fireworks, the zoo, swings, and trucks! He was also born with a hearing disability. In this inspiring, child-friendly kid’s book about hearing disability, written by his mother, Jojo will tell you all about his favorite things. He’ll also answer your questions about his tiny ear and show you that his disability doesn’t stop him from enjoying his life!

Author and illustrator Stefania Munzi-Logus writes lovingly, but informatively, about her son, his condition, and how to communicate with people with hearing disabilities.

“Be proud of what makes you, you.
We all thrive with our own technique.
You are valuable too.
The world is more beautiful when we are all unique.”

This is a picture book about microtia. But the real message for kids and parents alike is that differences are ok and that everybody is a little bit different!

****

“A wonderful book about inclusion and acceptance. Jojo is a resilient young boy who is full of life and, with the help of his mom, brings awareness to microtia. Through the book, Jojo teaches everyone that just because something may be different; you can still play, reach far places, and enjoy life all the same.” — Nicole Cossette, Doctoral Candidate, Infant and Early Childhood Development, Fielding Graduate University

“A playful and informative story about living with microtia. As someone who was born with microtia as well, it is important for stories like this one to introduce children and families to the specifics associated with the condition.” — Dr. Justine Green, author of Completely Me

“The fact that it highlights we are all unique sends a simple, but strong message that while each of us are different we all share the same challenges in life – albeit in different ways and that each obstacle can be overcome with each incremental step! This story book for young children encapsulates that very essence – I know this – for I am deaf, too.” — Carl Morris, World Pool Champion

“This beautifully illustrated book shares a powerful message about how kids who have differences are typical kids. They want to be included and treated like any other kid.” —Valli Gideons, author of Now Hear This: Harper Soars with her Magic Ears

“JoJo’s Tiny Ear highlights how ‘different’ is just a simple explanation away from being wonderful, accepted, and valued.” — Dr. Joseph Veth, Professor of Education, Albertus Magnus College
